Instead of showing just the chariots, I wanted to capture the feeling of being surrounded by an endless sea of devotion, where every person walks with the same destination and the same faith.
Every year, Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra leave the Jagannath Temple and travel to the Gundicha Temple in their beautifully handcrafted wooden chariots. After several days, they return during Bahuda Yatra, completing a journey that has united devotees for centuries.
What makes Rath Yatra truly special isn't just the size of the chariots—it's the people. During the festival, millions of devotees from across India and around the world fill the streets of Puri. From rooftops and balconies to every corner of the Grand Road, people gather simply to witness the divine journey and, if fortunate, help pull the sacred ropes of the Rathas.
One fascinating fact is that the English word "juggernaut" actually traces its origin to Jagannath. Early European travelers were amazed by the enormous wooden chariots moving through vast crowds and used the name to describe an unstoppable force. Today, "juggernaut" is a common English word, but its roots lead back to this incredible festival in Puri.
